Canadian Red Rhubarb Plant – Bareroot Crown

Bring vibrant color and tangy-sweet flavor to your garden with Canadian Red Rhubarb. Known for its rich red stalks and consistent productivity, this hardy perennial is ideal for pies, jams, and sauces. Thriving in USDA Zones 3–8, Canadian Red is a standout variety with a high yield of 2–3 lbs per plant each season and minimal maintenance needs. These bareroot crowns arrive ready to plant and will reward your patience with harvests beginning in year 2 and peak production by year 3.

Product Features:

  • Flavor Profile: Distinctly tangy with a hint of sweetness — perfect for pies and preserves.
  • Zones: 3–8; thrives in cooler climates and tolerates frost.
  • Mature Size: Reaches 4 ft tall and 4 ft wide.
  • Light Requirements: Full sun (6+ hours per day).
  • Yield: 2–3 pounds of stalks per season.
  • Toxicity Warning: Leaves contain oxalic acid and should not be consumed.

Planting Instructions:

  • When to Plant: Early spring after the ground thaws.
  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0–6.8); amend with compost or aged manure.
  • Spacing: 3–4 ft apart for proper root development and airflow.
  • Depth: Plant crowns 1–2 inches below the soil with buds facing up.
  • Watering: Keep soil moist but not soggy. Apply mulch to retain moisture and control weeds.
  • Fertilization: Use balanced fertilizer in early spring; refresh with compost yearly.

Harvesting:

  • First Harvest: Start harvesting in year 2; optimal yields in year 3.
  • How to Harvest: Pick stalks when 12–18 inches long by pulling or cutting at the base. Avoid harvesting in the first year and limit harvests to one-third of the plant to keep it productive.

Temporary Storage (If Not Planting Immediately):

  • Store in a cool, dark place. Wrap roots in slightly damp paper towels or moss and keep them in a breathable container. Plant within a week for best results.

Important Notes:

  • Cannot be shipped to Alaska or Hawaii.
  • Ships as a bareroot multi-shoot crown.
  • Rhubarb is self-pollinating and can thrive undisturbed in a permanent garden bed for 8+ years.
