Mason Tomato – A Sweet, Juicy Heirloom for Home Gardens

The Mason Tomato is a vibrant, deep red, currant-type tomato with a bold, mouth-popping flavor. About the size of a small cherry, this high-yielding heirloom is perfect for snacking, salads, and home gardens. Originally from Michigan, this beloved variety has been passed down since the 1990s, treasured for its incredible taste and reliability.

How to Grow Mason Tomato

  • Start Indoors: Sow seeds indoors at least 6 weeks before the last frost (around April 1).
  • Germination: Keep soil at 85°F using a heating mat; seeds will sprout in 5-14 days.
  • Transplanting: Move seedlings outdoors in late May once they have developed strong leaves. Space plants 18 inches apart in fertile, compost-rich soil.
  • Support & Care: Stake plants for support and prune for airflow to prevent fungal diseases like Early and Late Blight. Use drip irrigation or soaker hoses to keep foliage dry.
  • Crop Rotation: Avoid planting tomatoes where other Solanaceae crops (peppers, eggplant, potatoes) have grown in the last 4 years to prevent soil-borne diseases.

Harvesting & Seed Saving

  • Pick when fully deep red and slightly soft to the touch.
  • To prevent cracking, harvest individual fruits or clip entire clusters and store them "on the vine" until ready to use.
  • Save Seeds Easily: This variety is primarily self-pollinating, but to preserve purity, maintain a 10-foot isolation distance or 150 feet for complete isolation.
  • Fermenting Seeds: Scoop out seeds from very ripe tomatoes, ferment, rinse, and dry on a screen for long-term storage.
