Rove Beetles for Pest Control in Soil and Growing Media

Dalotia coriaria, formerly known as Atheta coriaria, is a beneficial predatory rove beetle used to control fungus gnats, shore flies, and certain thrips species that pupate in soil. These beetles hunt mainly in the top half-inch of growing media, targeting pests where they develop.

Adults crawl and fly between pots and growing areas, helping them disperse through greenhouse crops. Introduce them early as part of an integrated pest management program.

Application Rates

  • Prevention or light infestations: 0.2 beetles per square foot.
  • Hot spots: Up to 1 beetle per square foot.
  • After transplanting: Reintroduce at half the initial prevention rate.

Calculate quantities using the soil or growing-media surface area.

How to Release

Release at sundown. Gently rotate the container to distribute beetles through the carrier, then spread the contents across the growing-media surface. Leave the emptied container in the treatment area for 24 hours so remaining beetles can exit.
