Predatory Midges for Spider Mite Hotspots

Feltiella acarisuga, also known as Therodiplosis persicae, is a beneficial gall midge used for biological control of two-spotted spider mites and other spider mite species. Adult females locate mite colonies and lay eggs nearby. After hatching, the larvae feed on spider mite eggs, immature stages, and adults.

The flying adults help locate infestations throughout the crop, while the larvae do the feeding. This makes Feltiella a useful addition to an integrated pest management (IPM) program focused on spider mite hotspots.

When and How to Use

  • Begin introductions when the first spider mites are detected, before populations build into a heavy infestation.
  • Focus releases around spider mite hotspots and nearby affected plants.
  • Follow the instructions supplied with your product for opening and positioning the release container, release quantities, and repeat applications.
  • Protect the release container from direct sunlight and irrigation water.
  • Monitor infested foliage to assess mite activity and the need for additional releases.

Release quantities depend on the crop, growing conditions, and pest pressure. Use the supplier’s product-specific recommendations rather than a fixed preventive, moderate, or heavy-infestation rate.

Growing Conditions and Complementary Controls

Feltiella favors humid conditions and remains active during cooler, low-light periods, including spring and autumn. It can be used alongside Phytoseiulus persimilis as part of a coordinated spider mite control program. Check pesticide compatibility before combining biological controls with spray treatments.
