Biological Control for Green Peach and Tobacco Aphids
Aphidius matricariae is a beneficial parasitic wasp used to manage aphids in greenhouses, indoor growing spaces, and gardens. It is especially useful against green peach aphids and tobacco aphids, making it an option for growers building an integrated pest management (IPM) program around these pests.
Female wasps lay eggs inside suitable aphids. The developing larvae feed within their hosts, eventually killing them and leaving golden-brown aphid “mummies.” New adult wasps emerge through round exit holes and search for more aphids.
When to Introduce
Use preventatively or at the first sign of aphids, while colonies are still small. These wasps can locate colonies at low pest densities. Established infestations may require additional compatible beneficial insects as part of a broader control program.
Release and Monitoring
- Follow the instructions supplied with your product for release quantities and frequency based on the crop, aphid species, and pest pressure.
- Open the container near the affected plants to allow emerged adults to disperse.
- Distribute the remaining material onto horizontal leaves or into release boxes placed in the crop. Do not place aphid mummies directly on soil or growing media.
- Keep the release material dry and undisturbed for several days.
- Monitor for golden-brown aphid mummies, round emergence holes, and declining aphid populations to assess progress.
