Target Aphid Colonies with Beneficial Predatory Midges

Aphidoletes aphidimyza is a beneficial midge whose larvae feed on aphids. Adult females search for aphid colonies and lay eggs nearby, placing the next generation of predators close to their food source. The larvae feed on more than 60 aphid species, making them a useful addition to an integrated pest management (IPM) program.

Introduce these beneficial insects when aphids are first detected, while colonies are still small. They can also complement aphid parasitoid wasps as part of a coordinated biological control program.

How They Help Control Aphids

  • Aphid-seeking adults: Females locate colonies and lay eggs where aphids are present.
  • Predatory larvae: The larval stage feeds on aphids and provides pest control.
  • Broad aphid coverage: Larvae feed on more than 60 aphid species.

Release and Growing Conditions

  • Begin releases promptly after finding aphids and monitor colonies to assess whether additional releases are needed.
  • Follow the instructions supplied with your bottle for release method, quantity, and frequency. Rates depend on the crop, growing area, and aphid pressure.
  • Provide suitable moisture and humidity. Pupae are sensitive to drying, and slightly moist growing media supports pupation.
  • Protect release containers from direct sunlight and water.
  • Account for day length and temperature when planning repeat generations. Short days and cool conditions can trigger dormancy and limit continued population development.
