Whitefly Control with Dicyphus hesperus Predatory Bugs

Dicyphus hesperus is a beneficial predatory mirid bug used for biological control of whiteflies. Both adults and nymphs feed on pests, making this generalist predator a useful addition to a greenhouse integrated pest management (IPM) program.

Along with whiteflies, it feeds on thrips, two-spotted spider mites, and moth eggs. This broader feeding range can complement other biological controls as populations become established in the crop.

Planning Your Release

Dicyphus needs time to establish. Plan introductions as part of an ongoing pest management program, with regular scouting to monitor whitefly pressure and predator activity. Mullein banker plants and suitable supplemental food can support establishment.

This species also feeds on plant tissue. High populations can damage sensitive crops, including gerbera and some other ornamentals, so confirm suitability for your crop before release.

Handling and Application

  • Release promptly after arrival, following the instructions supplied with your bottle.
  • Apply in the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are milder.
  • Gently release the bugs onto foliage near affected areas, preferably out of direct sunlight.
  • Follow the supplier's directions for release rates, repeat applications, and any temporary storage.
  • Check pesticide compatibility before combining releases with chemical treatments.
