Stratiolaelaps scimitus (Hypoaspis miles) – Beneficial Predatory Mites
Stratiolaelaps scimitus (Hypoaspis miles) – Beneficial Predatory Mites - 1 liter bottle/no vermiculite 25K is backordered and will ship as soon as it is back in stock.
Biological Control for Soil-Dwelling Fungus Gnats, Thrips & Shore Flies
Stratiolaelaps scimitus, formerly known as Hypoaspis miles, is a beneficial predatory soil mite used for biological pest management in greenhouses, indoor gardens, nurseries, and other growing environments.
These tiny predators live primarily within the top half-inch of soil or growing media, where they actively search for soil-dwelling pests. Stratiolaelaps scimitus is best known for helping prevent and manage fungus gnat eggs and larvae, while also feeding on Western flower thrips pupae and certain shore fly eggs and larvae.
Applied directly to the growing media, these beneficial mites provide an easy way to incorporate biological pest control into an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program.
What Does Stratiolaelaps scimitus Control?
Stratiolaelaps scimitus feeds on several common soil-dwelling pests and life stages, including:
- Fungus gnat eggs and larvae (Sciaridae)
- Western flower thrips pupae
- Certain shore fly eggs and larvae
- Other small soil-dwelling arthropods
Because these predators target pests below or near the soil surface, they pair especially well with beneficial insects that target adult or above-ground pest stages.
Recommended Application Rates:
Application rates depend on pest pressure:
- Preventative: 1 predator per sq. ft.
- Moderate Infestation: 2 predators per sq. ft.
- Heavy Infestation: 5 predators per sq. ft.
For best results, introduce beneficial mites early before pest populations become severe.
How to Apply Stratiolaelaps scimitus:
- Apply promptly after receiving. These are live beneficial organisms and should be introduced as soon as possible.
- Check moisture levels. Growing media should be moist but not excessively wet before application.
- Apply to the soil surface. Distribute the predatory mites over the top of the soil or growing media.
- Maintain adequate moisture. Keep the growing media appropriately moist following application to support predator activity.
- Use caution with pesticides. Some chemical pesticides can harm beneficial mites and may interfere with biological control programs.
