Grow a piece of history with Sweet Siberian Organic Watermelon Seeds (Citrullus lanatus)—an heirloom watermelon variety beloved for its sweet, juicy golden flesh and reliability in cooler northern climates. This easy-to-grow, medium-sized watermelon features a classic green rind and small brown seeds, and has been a favorite in our garden since 2002.

Originally grown in the Siberian region of Russia and introduced to the U.S. around 1900, this variety was nearly lost to time until seed saver Glenn Drowns of Sand Hill Preservation Center revived it from the USDA seedbank in the 1980s. We’re proud to carry on this delicious tradition.

How to Grow:

• Watermelons love heat! Wait until soil is at least 65°F to direct sow outdoors (typically early June)
• Or start indoors around May 7 using biodegradable pots—transplant gently without disturbing roots
• Germinate at 85–95°F with a heating mat; seedlings emerge in 4–5 days
• Space plants widely and give them room to sprawl in full sun
• Protect young seedlings with row cover fabric to deter cucumber beetles
• Watch out for wildlife—deer and groundhogs love watermelon vines!

Harvest Tips:

Check for ripeness using these 3 signs:

1. Bottom spot turns from white to yellow
2. Tendril near the stem is dry and brown
3. Fruit sounds hollow when tapped
