pH and EC Explained: The Two Numbers Every Hydroponic Grower Must Know

What Is pH?
pH measures how acidic or alkaline your nutrient solution is, on a scale of 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is neutral; below 7 is acidic, above 7 is alkaline. For most hydroponic crops, the ideal range is 5.5 to 6.5, with 5.8 to 6.2 being the sweet spot for most nutrient uptake.
Why does it matter? Because even if your nutrient solution contains everything your plants need, they can't absorb those nutrients if the pH is off. This is called nutrient lockout, and it's one of the most common causes of deficiency symptoms in hydroponic grows.
How to Manage pH
- Test your reservoir pH daily, especially in warm weather when pH can drift quickly
- Use pH Up (potassium hydroxide) or pH Down (phosphoric acid) to adjust
- Make small adjustments and retest — overcorrecting is easy to do
- Invest in a quality digital pH meter and calibrate it regularly
What Is EC?
EC stands for Electrical Conductivity, and it measures the concentration of dissolved salts (nutrients) in your water. The higher the EC, the more nutrients are present. EC is measured in millisiemens per centimeter (mS/cm).
EC tells you how strong your nutrient solution is. Too low and your plants are underfed; too high and you risk nutrient burn and salt buildup around the roots.
General EC Guidelines by Growth Stage
- Seedlings/clones: 0.5 – 1.0 mS/cm
- Vegetative growth: 1.2 – 2.0 mS/cm
- Flowering/fruiting: 1.6 – 2.4 mS/cm
- Late flowering/flush: 0.5 – 1.0 mS/cm

How to Manage EC
- Measure EC every time you mix a new reservoir
- If EC is too high, dilute with plain water
- If EC is too low, add more nutrient concentrate
- Monitor EC between reservoir changes — as plants drink, EC can rise as water is consumed faster than nutrients
pH and EC Work Together
