How to Read Your Plants: Signs of Nutrient Deficiency and How to Fix Them
Plants can't talk, but they do communicate — through their leaves, stems, and overall appearance. Once you learn to read the signs, diagnosing and fixing nutrient deficiencies becomes much easier. Here's a guide to the most common deficiencies and what to do about them.
Nitrogen (N) Deficiency
Signs: Yellowing of older, lower leaves starting at the tips. Leaves may drop prematurely. Overall pale green color throughout the plant.
Fix: Increase nitrogen levels in your nutrient solution or top-dress with a nitrogen-rich amendment. In hydroponics, check your EC and adjust your base nutrients accordingly.
Phosphorus (P) Deficiency
Signs: Dark green or purplish discoloration on the undersides of leaves, especially on older growth. Stems may turn red or purple. Slow growth and delayed flowering.
Fix: Lower your reservoir pH to the 5.8–6.2 range (phosphorus uptake is pH-sensitive) and supplement with a phosphorus-rich bloom booster.
Potassium (K) Deficiency
Signs: Brown, scorched leaf edges and tips on older leaves. Yellowing between leaf veins. Weak stems and poor fruit or flower development.
Fix: Add a potassium supplement to your nutrient regimen. Ensure pH is in the correct range, as potassium lockout is often pH-related.
Calcium (Ca) Deficiency
Signs: Brown spots or dead patches on newer growth and leaf tips. Distorted or curled new leaves. Blossom end rot in fruiting plants.
Fix: Add a cal-mag supplement to your feeding schedule. This is especially common in RO or filtered water grows where calcium is stripped out.
Magnesium (Mg) Deficiency
Signs: Interveinal chlorosis (yellowing between the veins) on older leaves, while veins remain green. Leaves may curl upward.
Fix: Supplement with cal-mag or Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) at 1 tsp per gallon as a foliar spray or root drench.
Iron (Fe) Deficiency
Signs: Yellowing of new growth while veins stay green — the opposite pattern from magnesium deficiency. Most common in high-pH environments.
Fix: Lower your pH. Iron becomes unavailable above pH 7.0. A chelated iron supplement can also help in stubborn cases.
Prevention Is the Best Medicine
Most nutrient deficiencies are caused by pH imbalance, not an actual lack of nutrients. Always check your pH first before adding more nutrients — overfeeding can cause nutrient lockout and make things worse.
